The exact cause of Keratosis Pilaris was not discovered yet. However, many
experiments were made to discover it. So far it is considered as many factors
coming together, but the most important factor seems to be the overproduction
of protein called keratin inside the human skin. This excess gets trapped
inside the follicle, developing a bump.
About 40% of adults worldwide suffer from it without even
knowing it. Many patients have a strong family history of this skin disease. Therefore heredity and genetics appear to play another important role
in KP development, as childs with parents or other affected family members
already suffering from Chicken Skin have much greater predisposition to suffer
from it as well.
KP closely relates to diseases as asthma,
eczema, allergies and dry skin. The overall dryness of the skin tends to worsen
the KP condition.
Chicken
skin mostly appears on the upper arms, thighs and buttocks, but may develop
anywhere.
This skin disorder is mostly common among teenagers and develops during puberty, but I may occur in babies as well. But this occurrence is not so common. Even though this sickness is incurable, is usually disappears before the age of 35. KP is totally harmless (but unsightly) for you and for people around because it is not a contagious disease.

It tends to be worse during the cold winter months and
little bit better during the summer. It seems to be associated with low humidity and
tight clothes that are rubbing the bumps Also it appears to worsen during the pregnancy
and few months after the child is born. Food
relation to KP was not verified, even though some people noticed that the bumps
grow bigger and are more noticeable after they eat spicy food.
